With Lancaster’s iconic landmark, the Ashton Memorial about to undergo months of maintenance work starting this week, with good weather this weekend, I thought I would snap some exterior shots pre scaffolding…
Sometimes referred to as ‘England’s grandest folly‘ Lancaster’s Ashton Memorial dominates the skyline from it’s park surrounds on the edge of the city. It was built just over 100 years ago by Lancaster linoleum and oilcloth entrepreneur Lord Ashton, in memory to his wife.
Two grand sweeping stairs of Cornish granite lead up to the memorial and make a stunning location for wedding and portrait photography, especially when accompanied by a striking blue sky.
Much photographed by visitors as well as photographers the 150 feet high Edwardian baroque building is made of Portland stone, can be dazzling in summer sunshine.
The City Council run building, which is usually open to the public is regularly used for events and weddings and has been a much loved haunt of mine for many years, personally and professionally. It contains an art gallery and balconies with stunning views looking over Lancaster and across Morecambe Bay to the lovely Lakeland Fells beyond.
Much photographed is the main entrance, pictured by me below (using my ultra wide-angle lens) from Butterfly House opposite.
I hope you have enjoyed my snapshot of the Ashton Memorial. You can see all my photos from this mini shoot HERE. Next time I will take you on a peek inside this wonderful building. Better still, if you get the chance and especially if you haven’t been yet, do pay it a visit soon!
