Back from a recent short break on the Isle Of Man, I thought I’d share several photos from my trip. I’m a huge fan of this much under-rated holiday destination. A fantastic place for wildlife, walking, cycling, heritage as well as of course photography!
Most people stay in the island’s biggest town, Douglas. Not the prettiest of places perhaps (and beware of some of the more run-down hotels on the Prom), it is however a pleasant and convenient base.
Leave the town behind and head north up the coast and you will instantly encounter some stunning scenery. I travelled on one of the beautifully kept historic electric trams, which weave and rattle their way up the coast to Laxey and Ramsay.
I loved the polished wood panelling and coloured glass roof windows, which glowed with the sun.
I alighted at the delightful village of Laxey. Many head straight for the famous wheel, but the old village and harbour at the foot of the hill is well worth a visit too. The sparkling sea and shadows on the jetty appealed to my photographic eye here.
It’s always worth looking out for something different or amusing to add to your holiday snaps and this Manx cat (with tail) was admiring the local birdlife (which had the safety of water).
In Spring, the island bursts into colour and the broom covers vast areas with bright yellow flowers. I like to vary my photography and switch to my macro lens for some striking close-ups.
No visit to the Isle Of Man is complete without a trip on the exquisite heritage steam railway, which runs from Douglas to Port Erin, in the south. Starting at Port Soderick is as good a place as any and I was intrigued by the primitive signalling system.
The railway is the pride of the island and I was so impressed, I joined the Isle Of Man Steam Railway Supporters Association when I got home.
This small selection of photos doesn’t really do the island justice, so pack your camera and get over there. You won’t be disappointed!
COMING SOON My next ‘ramble’ is an island rather further afield; Singapore!
